Condo Cooking on BBQ: Navigating Barbecue Etiquette and Regulations

Updated: Jul 15, 2024

As we gather with friends and family to maximize our summers, many will take advantage of the warming weather by hosting outdoor events and picnics while cooking on the BBQ. While these al fresco gatherings offer a wonderful opportunity to enjoy delicious food and quality time together, it's important to be mindful of condo outdoor barbecue etiquette and regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Barbecue may not be the road to world peace, but it's a start - Anthony Bourdain

Our favourite chef, the late Anthony Bourdain, isn't wrong! We especially believe that BBQ is a great way to strengthen connections with family and friends, but also with neighbours in your condo! It's a great personal event, or even a social committee option for consideration, but whichever route you go for enjoying outdoor cooking on the BBQ - be sure that you're respectful of your condo, its community, or any other nearby neighbour!

Here are our top factors to consider when condo cooking on BBQs:

Condo Cooking on BBQ

Choose a Suitable Location for Cooking on BBQ

Condos often have a dedicated space for those looking to do some BBQing, which can usually be used by all residents or rented out for private events. Ensure that you understand your condo's rules and regulations about this area before getting started, and that you respect them while grilling on the BBQ and hosting your event.

If you're choosing to BBQ elsewhere, such as at a public park, choose a designated barbecue area or a spacious outdoor setting that is conducive to grilling and dining. Ensure that the chosen location is permitted for barbecuing and complies with any local regulations or guidelines regarding open flames and outdoor cooking.

Don't forget that many condos have restrictions regarding cooking on your balcony! Here's a great guide on the summer set-up and safety for your condo balcony, including free templates for condo managers!

Respect Noise and Disturbance Levels: Respecting the Community While Cooking

Be considerate of nearby barbecuers and other people by keeping noise levels to a minimum and avoiding disruptive behavior. If hosting a barbecue in a public public or communal space, adhere to any noise ordinances and be mindful of quiet hours. Don't forget that condos have rules about nuisance behaviours, which includes noise.

Dispose of Post BBQ Waste Properly

Maintain cleanliness and hygiene by disposing of barbecue waste, such as general garbage, food scraps, and packaging, in designated trash receptacles. Avoid littering or leaving behind any mess that could detract from the enjoyment of the BBQ and environment for others. Failure to clean up after yourself could put you at risk for being back-charged by the condo, and you may end up with amenity restrictions for repeat issues.

Practice Fire Safety While Cooking on BBQ

Exercise caution when using barbecue grills or open flames outdoors to prevent accidents and minimize the risk of fire hazards as you're cooking on the BBQ. Follow manufacturer instructions for safe operation of the grill, and ensure that it is positioned on a stable surface away from flammable materials. You can check out this general fire safety tips issued by Canada's government to make sure everyone is safe,

Be Mindful of Smoke and Odors

Consideration for others extends to minimizing the impact of barbecue smoke and odors on surrounding areas. Position the grill downwind, if possible, to reduce the spread of smoke, or avoid cooking on the BBQ on especially windy days.

By adhering to outdoor barbecue etiquette and regulations, everyone can enjoy a memorable celebration while respecting the environment and the well-being of others. Whether grilling up the usual favorites or experimenting with seasonal vegetarian dishes, let's come together for some condo cooking on the BBQ with good food, good company, and the beauty of the great outdoors.

Wishing you a fun summer full of delicious barbecue delights!

Small and self-managed condominiums face unique challenges, yet most management models are tailored to large corporations and scaled down from there.

Condo Care helps communities find and implement management solutions that fit their actual needs... not someone else's template.

Psst... don't worry, we're different, too!

Condo Care

by Stratastic

A 10-unit condominium doesn't have 10% of the responsibilities of a 100-unit condominium.

It still needs governance, compliance, maintenance planning, financial oversight, and community building. Yet many small condominium corporations receive less support because traditional management models are often designed for larger communities first.

Isn't it time condo management made sense, especially for the small ones?

We believe small condos deserve better.

Condo Care was created because we saw a quickly growing gap in the condominium industry.

Small condominium corporations were increasingly:

>   Struggling to find management.

>   Losing access to experienced professionals.

>   Being priced out of traditional models.

>   Left to solve complex challenges with limited resources.

Our mission is simple: To help small and self-managed condominium corporations access practical, sustainable management solutions that reflect their actual needs.

We're not property managers.
We're property management consultants.

Most companies start with a service package.

We start with your condominium. After understanding your goals, challenges, budget, and desired level of involvement, we help identify the most appropriate management model for your needs. We focus on you, so we can find the right fit for your community.

Because the right answer isn't always the same...

and every condo needs care.

One Condominium. Multiple Paths Forward.

Condo Care offers completely customizable management solutions for small and self-managed condominium corporations across Ontario. Our most commonly chosen options center around the following categories:

>   Traditional Management: For boards seeking a comprehensive management solution with minimal involvement. Often, this involves working with one of our partnered property management companies for a more familiar approach.

>   Hybrid Management: A combination of licensed management services (whether through a management company or self-employed service provider) and/or administrative support. This solution is often ideal for smaller and moderately involved communities seeking flexibility and value.

>   Self-Management Support: For communities that want to stay truly involved while gaining access to professional guidance, resources, and trusted vendors.

What does an exploratory meeting look like?

Well, first of all, it's 100% free and 0% commitment... just a interest in putting our heads together to grasp your condominium's needs and how to support you shaping your condo community and operations!

Got 30 minutes? We've got a customized plan!

During your meeting, you'll get to discuss with our founder, Andreea, who is as passionate about small condo communities as you are about ensuring yours runs perfectly... both in terms of operations and communications!

You'll get to share what's working, what isn't, and how you envision your parcel of Condoland being managed, regardless if you're looking for self-management, limited management, or traditional property management solutions.

We've got you covered. Because every condo deserves care.
