WCB: Are you covered?

Author:
Paulette Handberg
Publication date:

Article Summary:

The Workers' Compensation Board – Alberta (WCB) provides benefits and liability protection for employers and workers in cases of workplace injuries. Condominium properties and homeowners' associations (HOAs) in Alberta have certain coverage responsibilities under the Workers' Compensation Act. Coverage is required for workers employed by the condominium or HOA, including paid workers, owners, residents, and their families if they are compensated for the services they provide. Subcontractors hired by the condo corporation for services also require coverage, unless they have their own WCB account. Optional coverage is available for unpaid workers and condo directors and board members, who can purchase personal coverage to receive liability protection in case of a workplace injury. Volunteers and unpaid individuals can also be covered if requested by the condo corporation.
