Tips to Keep a Sump Pump Discharge Line from Freezing

Author:
PuroClean Canada
Publication date:

Article Summary:

The sump pump discharge line should be either buried in the yard or extended out above-grade at a downward slope. If buried, it should be buried at least 12 centimetres below the frost line, and an above-grade solution should extend the line away from the house at a downward slope. A smooth, rigid, and freeze-resistant hose should be connected to the end of the discharge hose and discharge water at least 6 metres away from the foundation. PuroClean is a leading commercial and residential restoration franchising company that offers fire and water cleanup and restoration services, mould mitigation and remediation, and biohazard cleanup and removal throughout the US and Canada. The sump pump discharge line and intake section should be insulated to guard against freezing, and the outside pipe can be covered with hay and a tarp. If the sump pump pipe is frozen, portable heaters can be used to thaw it, but using a blow torch is a bad idea.
