Article Summary:

Carpet has evolved significantly from its origins in ancient times when early rugs were made from sheep wool or goat hair around 2000-3000 B.C. Originating in the Middle East, carpets were initially crafted for comfort while sitting on the ground, marking the inception of the global carpet industry. In America, carpet production began in 1791 with the establishment of the first woven carpet mill in Philadelphia, followed by widespread growth in New England during the early 1800s.

The invention of the power loom by Erastus Bigelow in 1839 revolutionized carpet manufacturing, doubling production and propelling America into a leading role in carpet technology. Dalton, Georgia, later became renowned as "The Carpet Capital of the World" due to Catherine Evans Whitener's development of tufted carpets, which transformed from bedding to flooring and supported families during the Depression.

By the 1950s, carpet fibers expanded beyond plain cotton to include wool and synthetic materials like polyester and nylon. Innovations in continuous filament nylon yarns made carpet more durable and affordable, culminating in a billion-dollar industry milestone in 1963. Today, the carpet industry, still centered in Dalton, Georgia, accounts for over 70% of global output, driven by advancements in stain resistance, durability, and design variety.

Carpet remains a popular flooring choice globally due to its warmth, comfort, and affordability compared to hardwood. Its ability to adapt to various climates and its aesthetic versatility ensure that carpet continues to thrive, offering consumers a wide range of textures, colors, and patterns to suit every home's style and practical needs.
