Managing a project is a team effort that involves several key project roles. These roles include project sponsor, project manager, project coordinator, and project manager. Project sponsor is deeply invested in the project and holds the purse strings, while project manager reports to the project sponsor and helps with the project charter. Project manager is the point person for vendors and independent contractors, creating contracts and managing their services. Project coordinator is a go-between that helps facilitate the project manager's job in terms of project operations.

Project administrators are responsible for administrative tasks such as making reports, planning meetings and facilitating team collaboration activities. Project analysts are responsible for gathering and analyzing data for project management decision-making. Project directors lead project management teams and external parties. Change control boards are responsible for approving changes to the project plan. Steering committees are formed by a cross-functional team of executives.

PMOs are responsible for developing standards and policies to govern project management and ensuring projects are aligned with their organization's strategic goals and business objectives. Project managers are supported by the PMO and are responsible for executing tasks and updating their statuses to the project manager.
