Article Summary:

The Ontario Ministry of Government and Consumer Services has released the TSSA Elevator Availability Study Final Report, which includes input from stakeholders such as elevator users, owners, manufacturers, contractors, consultants, and the building industry. Issues of concern include no commonly accepted definition of elevator availability, lack of data on elevator reliability, and no minimum preventative maintenance standards. The report contains 19 recommendations to improve elevator availability, including defining and measuring "Elevator Availability", improving preventative maintenance and outage management, improving education and awareness for elevator owners, developing standards for the capacity of elevators required in new buildings, reviewing regulations and industry practices to enhance labour mobility and availability, and providing reliable elevator access for first responders. Implementation timelines for the recommendations are also set out.
