Legislative Newsflash – Proposed Changes to the Employment Standards Act – December 2020 - Dec 2020

Publication date:

Article Summary:

In December 2020, two bills proposing changes to the Employment Standards Act, 2000 (ESA) were presented before the provincial legislature. Bill 200 aims to permanently prohibit employers, including condominium corporations, from requiring sick notes for sick leave. Employers can still ask for other evidence, such as notes from family members or caregivers. On the other hand, Bill 210 proposes amending the ESA to entitle superintendents, janitors, and caretakers residing in residential buildings to receive minimum wage without considering room and board as part of their wage. The CCI-Toronto Legislative Committee will closely monitor the progress of these bills and provide updates when necessary.
