Legislative Newsflash: Provincial Government Proposes New Employee Protections

The Ontario government introduced Bill 27, the Working for Workers Act, 2021, on October 25, 2021, which proposes amendments to various pieces of legislation to protect the rights of employees. Two significant changes relevant to condominium communities are highlighted. Firstly, the bill requires employers with 25 or more employees to have a written policy on disconnecting from work at the end of the workday. Secondly, the bill prohibits the use of non-compete agreements in employment contracts, except in cases of business sales. If passed, Ontario will become the first province in Canada to ban non-competition clauses and mandate a work-disconnection policy.
