How to Write an Action Plan (Example Included)

An action plan is a document that lists the action steps needed to achieve project goals and objectives. It is similar to a project implementation plan and is helpful during the project planning and project execution phases. The benefits of an action plan are simple: it outlines what action steps and resources are needed to reach your stated project goals, and by having this all collected in a single project management document, you can more successfully plan out how to execute your project plan. The fundamentals to getting an action plan together for any project follow these four project planning basic steps: define your project goals, define your project objectives, create a timeline for tasks or action items, and determine what team members you'll need to do it all. Project objectives are more specific than project goals, and the action steps are a group of related tasks or action items that must be executed to produce project deliverables. To create an action plan, it is important to identify and prioritize action items, define roles and responsibilities, allocate resources, set SMART goals, set a timeline, and write an action plan template.
