How to Tend to Your Garden In The Fall and Increase The Value Of Your Home in The Spring

According to Illinois-based nonprofit the Morton Arboretum, planting trees and shrubs starting mid-August up until mid-October can oftentimes be more beneficial than planting in the springtime. This is because cooler temperatures aren’t as abrasive on trees as extreme heat is, meaning they have a greater chance of survival. Furthermore, autumn rains facilitate trees’ and shrubs’ root growth. What this means is that because the air is cooler in the fall than the soil, plants take the time to strengthen their root systems; even though there might not be much growth on top, you can rest assured that your trees and shrubs are working on becoming healthy. Trees and shrubs will be beautiful and stronger come springtime.

Fall is also the perfect time to plant spring bulbs like tulips and hyacinth — this is a great way to add value to your property if you’re planning on selling it on the bustling spring market. The beautiful florals will sprout up just in time for the warmer weather, adding striking colours and an effortless elegance. They’re so easy to plant as well — just place in the ground and add soil and mulch on top.

Another way to work on making your property look its best in the springtime is to take a defensive approach against springtime pests. To avoid grass and turf damage, you can apply fall protection and distribute fertilizer, which will further encourage root growth. Come April, raccoons and skunks tend to be able to sniff out grubs and dig for them, but fostering deeper root systems by adding fertilizer and turf can work to keep your plants safe from the driving hands of pests. No damage to your grass and turf works toward adding value to your property by helping you avoid costly repairs and landscaping.

There are so many things we can do to our homes this autumn. So get out there and with these easy steps — planting a beautiful tree or shrub, scattering bulbs, protecting against damage — improve your home’s value!
