How Climate Change Will Affect Condo Communities in the Future

Climate change is having a major impact on condo communities in the future, with higher condo fees, increased flood risks, power outages, damage to outside walls and materials, and greater stress on air conditioning systems and chillers. These changes are necessary to address infrastructure issues and damage from climate change, and older condo buildings may suffer further damage. Additionally, condos may become too hot to live in due to larger glass windows, which could make living in a condo more uncomfortable. Legislative changes are being introduced to ensure buildings and infrastructure are constructed to withstand the effects of climate change, including new guidelines for roof resiliency certification, structural design rules, climate resilience guidelines for existing stormwater systems, and basement flood protection standards. These changes are slated to be incorporated into Canadian building codes by 2025.
