Adult Only Condos

This article discusses the battle in Alberta, Canada between millennials with families and older generations who prefer quieter condo communities. Alberta is currently the only province in Canada allowing condos to exclude residents under the age of 18. However, a recent human rights challenge may change this. Age-restrictions are usually put in place by the developer, but can be removed with the support of 75% of owners. Many millennials are opposing age-restrictions that limit where they can reside, especially since Alberta's population has been growing by about 100,000 people per year since 2012. Approximately 10% of all condo buildings in Alberta are estimated to have age-restrictions. Age restrictions are prohibited in condo buildings throughout Ontario.
