7 Hardworking and Welcoming New Mudrooms


With school back in session and fall weather arriving, it is an ideal time to consider the appeal of a mudroom. These entry spaces help corral backpacks, boots, sports gear, coats and other items you don't want making their way deep inside your home. The most effective spaces typically feature durable materials, specialized storage, a spot for sitting and taking off shoes and, of course, a style that sets the tone for the rest of your interior spaces. Seven design professionals share details on how they approached creating a stylish and functional mudroom.
This project was inspired by the homeowners' request for a place to take their shoes off indoors and not worry about messing up the floors. The main feature was the Dutch door and porcelain tile floor, which is more durable than rock or terra cotta. The cabinets, door, moldings and walls were painted Simply White by Benjamin Moore, and the mudroom was converted from a spare bedroom into a larger laundry room. The main entry into the home was a lengthy walk from the driveway and parking area and entered into a main foyer with no touchdown space for coats, backpacks, shoes.
