15 Ways To Kick Your Kitchen Island Up a Notch

Kitchen islands are becoming increasingly popular among homeowners who are remodeling or building their kitchens from scratch. With the help of a talented designer and cabinetmaker, you can equip your island with all kinds of handy bells and whistles. These include an integrated chopping block and knife holder, a dog bowl station with pot filler, a removable inset cutting board, a charging drawer, and a laptop ledge. These features make the island look more like a farmhouse table than cabinetry. Kitchen islands can be used as homework stations and home offices, with outlets at the back and drawers at one end to store paper and other office supplies.

They can also be used as a chopping station, folding countertop, and pullout table. White Birch Design created a walnut-topped island with two drop-down leaves, and Board & Vellum architects installed a table that pulls out from the island like a drawer. If your island is small, locking casters can be used to change its layout or move it out of the way.
