Article Summary:

Security Electromagnetic Locks

It's important for building owners and property managers to consider the safety and security of their occupants, and electromagnetic locks can be a useful tool to achieve that. However, it's also important to ensure that the installation of maglocks is done in accordance with the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and local fire safety regulations.

In particular, buildings that exceed 6 storeys must allow occupants to exit from within a stairwell back onto a floor area and freely cross over into another adjacent stairwell at designated crossover floors. Maglocks can be used to secure stairwells, but dual contact pull stations must be installed on both sides of the stairwell to allow occupants to gain access back onto a secured floor area. Emergency lighting and exit pictograms should also be installed to meet bi-directional egress pathway requirements.

It's recommended to consult with a professional to ensure that the appropriate security and life safety systems are in place in your building.
